Lisl Steiner (born November 19, 1927 – died June 7, 2023) was an amazing photographer, photojournalist, and documentary filmmaker from Austria and America. She was famous for taking pictures of important political leaders and cultural figures in the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the well-known people she photographed include Fidel Castro, Oscar Niemeyer, Louis Armstrong, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Richard Nixon, and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Early Life and Moving to Argentina
Lisl Steiner was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1927. Her family was Jewish. In 1938, when Adolf Hitler took control of Austria, her family had to leave. They moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to find safety.
In Argentina, Lisl went to art school. She studied at the University of Buenos Aires. She also attended the Fernando Fader School of Decorative Arts.
Starting Her Photography Career
When Lisl was in her twenties, she began working in documentary films. She helped create about 50 documentaries for Argentina's foreign ministry. These films helped share information about Argentina with other countries.
Around age 30, Lisl started her career in photojournalism. This is when photographers take pictures to tell a news story. Her first big photo was of Argentina's president, Pedro Eugenio Aramburu. It was published in Life magazine. After that, she worked for the Brazilian magazine O Cruzeiro, taking photos all over Latin America.
Moving to New York and Famous Photos
In 1960, Lisl Steiner moved to New York City. She started working as a freelance photographer for many famous magazines. These included Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, Life, and Associated Press.
That same year, she took pictures of Fidel Castro during his famous visit to the United Nations. She also photographed other important people. These included the artist Henri Cartier-Bresson and U.S. President Jimmy Carter. She even photographed the state funeral of John F. Kennedy.
In 2000, the Leica Gallery in Manhattan showed many of her works. This special exhibit looked back at her long career.
Personal Life and Passing Away
In the early 1970s, Lisl Steiner moved to Westchester County, New York. She lived in Pound Ridge for many years. She was married to Meyer Monchek, who was a psychiatrist. They lived together for 24 years until he passed away in 1992.
Lisl Steiner died on June 7, 2023. She was 95 years old.
