The Lismore railway station is an old train station located in Lismore, New South Wales, Australia. It used to be part of the Murwillumbah line. This station is very important because it's listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. This means it's a special historical place.

Even though the trains don't run here anymore, you can still catch NSW TrainLink coach services from the station area. These buses can take you to places like Casino and Tweed Heads.

History of Lismore Station

Lismore railway station first opened its doors on 15 May 1894. For many years, it was a busy spot for travellers and goods. However, on 16 May 2004, the train line from Casino to Murwillumbah was closed. This meant that Lismore station also stopped operating as a train station.

Train Platforms and Services

Lismore station had one main platform where passengers would wait for trains. It also had a "passing loop," which is an extra track that allowed trains to pass each other.

  • Early Services: Trains from Sydney used to serve Lismore. One famous train was the North Coast Mail.
  • Later Services: In 1973, the North Coast Mail was replaced by the Gold Coast Motorail. This train allowed people to take their cars with them.
  • Final Services: In February 1990, the Gold Coast Motorail was replaced by a faster XPT service. The XPT trains were the last passenger trains to stop at Lismore before the line closed.

What the Station Looks Like

The old station complex has several interesting buildings.

  • Station Building: The main station building is made of timber (wood) and has a brick platform. It's a special design called a "type 4 standard roadside design." It has nice details and a lovely verandah (a covered porch) facing the street.
  • Carriage Shed: There's a large shed that used to hold train carriages. It has a unique "sawtooth roof" design. This shed started with 15 sections and was later made bigger to have 21 sections.
  • Locomotive Shed: You can also find a shed made of corrugated iron. This was where the train engines (locomotives) were kept. It's a "straight shed" design.
  • Original Buildings: All these buildings, including the station, carriage shed, and locomotive shed, were built in 1894.
  • Station Residence: The old house where the station master or other railway staff lived is located nearby at 18 Malendy Drive.

Why Lismore Station is Special

Lismore station and its surrounding buildings are considered very important historical sites. They are a great example of railway structures that are rarely found together and still exist today.

  • Rare Buildings: The station building itself is a rare type of timber station. It has beautiful details and a very fine verandah.
  • Important Group: The other buildings, like the carriage shed and locomotive shed, are also rare examples of their kind. Together, they form an important group of railway history.
  • Town Landmark: The entire station area is a significant part of Lismore's town. When combined with other important buildings nearby, it adds a lot to the town's look and feel.

Lismore railway station was officially added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. This happened because it met several important rules. It was seen as historically, scientifically, and architecturally rare. This means it has unique features from the past, special design elements, and is important for understanding how things were built. It's also considered socially rare, meaning it played a unique role in the community's history.
