Casino railway station is an important train station in Casino, Australia. It is located on the North Coast line. This station first opened on 22 September 1930. It helps people travel to and from Casino. The station is also special because it is a heritage-listed site. This means it has historical importance and is protected.

History of Casino Station

The first train station in Casino was called Old Casino railway station. It opened on 19 October 1903. This was when the Murwillumbah line was extended. Trains could then travel from Lismore to Grafton.

Later, the main North Coast line was built. This new line went from Kyogle towards Queensland. It did not pass through the Old Casino station. So, a brand new station was needed for Casino. The new Casino railway station opened on 22 September 1930.

The station originally had two platforms. One platform was later closed in October 1990. It was filled in and turned into a bus stop. The Murwillumbah line branches off just north of the station. This line has not been used for regular trains since 2004. However, a small part of the track is still used for moving trains around.

Casino also had a place where train engines were kept and fixed. This was called a locomotive depot. It had a roundhouse, which is a circular building for engines. This depot closed in 1986. It reopened in 1996 when a company called Northern Rivers Railroad leased it.

Trains and Buses at Casino

Casino station has one platform for trains. It also has a passing loop, which allows trains to pass each other.

Every day, two main train services use this station:

  • A train called the XPT travels north to Brisbane.
  • Another XPT train travels south to Sydney.
  • An additional XPT train from Sydney ends its journey at Casino.

NSW TrainLink also runs bus services from the station. These buses connect to places like Tweed Heads, Robina, Surfers Paradise, and Brisbane.

What the Station Looks Like

The Casino railway station complex is heritage-listed. This means its buildings and structures are important. The main station building is made of brick. It was finished in 1930. There are also brick refreshment rooms from the same year. These are places where people could buy food and drinks.

The station also has old train maintenance facilities. These include:

  • A standard roundhouse from 1933.
  • A water column in the locomotive depot yard.
  • A steel water tank with a column.
  • A 75-foot turntable from 1933. This was used to turn train engines around.
  • A timber and steel 'Harmon' coal stage from 1956. This was used to load coal onto steam trains.

An old signal box, built in 1946, was taken down in 2012.

Why Casino Station is Heritage Listed

The Casino station group is a very important collection of buildings. It is located in a major country area. The station building is one of the largest standard designs. Together with the refreshment rooms, it forms one of the best examples of later period station groups in the state.

The facilities for trains, like the roundhouse, are also very important. The timber coal loader is especially significant. It is the last of its kind on the entire rail system.

Casino railway station was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. It met several important criteria to be listed.

The station is considered rare in a few ways:

  • Historically rare: It has unique historical importance.
  • Scientifically rare: It offers special insights for study.
  • Architecturally rare: Its design and buildings are uncommon.
  • Socially rare: It holds a unique place in the community's history.
