History of the Old Casino Station
How the Station Started
The station first opened its doors on 19 October 1903. Back then, it was simply known as "Casino railway station." It became a key stop when the Murwillumbah railway line was extended to Casino.
Why It Became "Old Casino"
Later, a new main railway line was built. This line, called the North Coast railway line, connected Kyogle to the Queensland border and then to Brisbane. The new line didn't go through the original Casino station.
So, a brand new Casino railway station was built on the new line. When this new station opened in 1930, the original station was renamed "Old Casino." It continued to operate as a smaller branch line station for many years.
Closure and New Life as a Museum
The Old Casino station stopped operating as a train station around 1974. For a long time, it was left empty. However, it has since been carefully restored. Now, it is home to the Old Casino Station Museum, where visitors can learn about its past.
Some parts of the old station have changed over time. The train platform was removed around 1990. There was also a very old and rare type of crane at the station. Sadly, this crane was damaged and destroyed during a storm in 2012.
What the Station Looks Like
The station building is made of timber. It was built in 1903 and follows a special design called "type 16 pioneer." This design was common for early railway stations in new areas.
Why Old Casino Station is Important
The Old Casino station is very important because it was the first railway station in the area. It opened in 1903 and played a big role in connecting Casino to other towns. When the main line to Brisbane opened in 1930, the station changed its name to "Old Casino."
It's a great example of an early "pioneer" building for a large town. The station is recognized for its historical value and is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. This means it's protected because of its importance to the history and culture of New South Wales.
