Tennessee has had 50 governors so far, including the current one, Bill Lee. Some governors, like John Sevier and William Carroll, served more than one time, but not right after each other. Each governor is counted only once, even if they served multiple terms.

Governors of the Southwest Territory
Before Tennessee became a state, it was known as the Territory South of the Ohio River, or the Southwest Territory. This territory was officially created on May 26, 1790.
During its six years as a territory, it had only one governor. He was chosen by the federal government.

Governors of the State of Tennessee
The Southwest Territory officially joined the United States as the state of Tennessee on June 1, 1796.
When Tennessee first became a state, its constitution said that the governor would serve for two years. A person could not be governor for more than six years in any eight-year period. Later, in 1953, the term changed to four years, and governors could not serve two terms in a row. Today, the state constitution, updated in 1978, allows a governor to serve two four-year terms in a row.
