What are Listed Buildings?
When a building is "listed," it means it's officially chosen because it has "special architectural or historic interest." Think of it like a VIP pass for buildings! These places are important parts of history and culture.
Why are Buildings Listed?
Grade A buildings are the most important ones in Northern Ireland. They are either super beautiful, unique, or have stayed almost exactly the same since they were built. Once a building is listed, you can't change it much without special permission. This helps keep these amazing places safe for everyone to enjoy for many years. You need to get "listed building consent" from the local council before you can make any changes.
How Buildings Get Listed
The idea of listing buildings started a bit later in Northern Ireland than in other parts of the UK. The first rules for listing buildings came out in 1972, and the current rules were set in 1991. A government department, the Department for Communities (DfC), is in charge of making these lists.
They started checking all the buildings in Northern Ireland in 1974. This first check finished in 1994. Because the way they listed buildings got much better, they started a second check. This second check is still happening today to update and double-check all the information. All the details about listed and unlisted buildings are put into a public database called the Northern Ireland Buildings Database. They use special rules to decide if a building is important enough to be listed.
County Armagh is about 1,254 square kilometers (484 square miles) and has around 160,000 people living there. It has 30 Grade A listed buildings. A lot of these, 25 of them, are in the city of Armagh itself!
