List of Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross recipients (J) facts for kids
The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was a very important military award in Nazi Germany during World War II. It was given to soldiers, sailors, and airmen for being incredibly brave or for showing great leadership in battle. This award was one of the highest honors a person could receive in the German military.
Between 1939 and 1945, about 7,321 Knight's Crosses were given out. They went to members of the German Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as other groups like the Waffen-SS. Some foreign soldiers from countries allied with Germany also received this award.
A book by Walther-Peer Fellgiebel, called The Bearers of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross 1939–1945, lists all the people who received this award. However, some of these listings have been questioned, especially those given out in the very last days of the war when things were chaotic.
This list focuses on 142 people whose last names start with "J" who received the Knight's Cross. The rank shown for each person is what they were at the time they received the award.
About the Knight's Cross
The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross had different levels, like a series of achievements. It started with the basic Iron Cross award. If someone showed even more bravery or leadership, they could receive a higher level of the Knight's Cross.
Here are the different levels of the Knight's Cross:
- The basic Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was created on September 1, 1939.
- As the war went on, a higher award was added: the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. This was for those who continued to show outstanding bravery.
- Later, in 1941, two even higher levels were introduced: the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. These were for truly exceptional actions.
- The highest level, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds, was created at the very end of 1944.
To receive a higher level, a person usually had to have received all the levels before it.
Who Received the Awards?
The German military kept separate lists for the Knight's Cross awards for each branch: the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Waffen-SS. Each person on these lists received a unique number.
Out of the 142 awards given to people with "J" last names:
- 14 later received the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves.
- 2 received the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.
- 15 awards were given after the person had died in battle.
- The Army received 85 of these medals.
- The Navy received 9.
- The Air Force received 42.
- The Waffen-SS received 6.
Some of the higher award numbers are unofficial. They were given by a group called the Association of Knight's Cross Recipients.
This color and a + (plus) mean the person also received a higher level of the Knight's Cross.
This color and a * (asterisk) mean the Knight's Cross was given after the person had died.
This color and a ! (exclamation mark) mean that the author Walther-Peer Fellgiebel had doubts about this award.
This color and a ? (question mark) mean that the author Veit Scherzer had doubts about this award.
