What Are Historic Landmarks?
Imagine a building or a place that has a really important story to tell about the past. That's what a historic landmark is! In 1967, the City of San Diego created a group called the Historical Resources Board. Their job is to find and protect these important buildings and places. So far, they have named over 850 historic landmarks! Many of these places are also recognized by the United States government, meaning they are important to the whole country.
This list focuses on more than 50 San Diego Historic Landmarks found in the Point Loma peninsula and Ocean Beach areas. Let's explore some of them!
Historic Places in Point Loma
Point Loma is a beautiful peninsula with a long history. Many of its landmarks tell stories of early settlers, defense, and unique communities.
Old Point Loma Lighthouse
One of the most famous landmarks is the Lighthouse of 1854. It was built between 1854 and 1855 right at the entrance of San Diego Bay. This lighthouse helped guide ships safely into the harbor for many years until 1891. Today, the National Park Service has restored it, and it's a popular spot at Cabrillo National Monument.
Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery
The Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is a special place that honors soldiers. It's a national military cemetery located on the Point Loma peninsula, offering beautiful views of the bay and the city. The remains of U.S. soldiers who fought in the Battle of San Pasqual were moved here in 1882. It became a historic landmark in 1970.
Fort Guijarros
Near the base of Ballast Point, you'll find the site of Fort Guijarros. This was a Spanish fort built way back in 1797. It was the very first defense for San Diego Bay. The name "Guijarros" means "cobblestones." This fort was even involved in a naval battle with an American trading ship!
Jennings House (Oldest House in Point Loma)
The Jennings House, located at 1018 Rosecrans Street, is known as the oldest house in Point Loma. Built in 1886, this frame house was once the childhood home of Belle Benchley. She was a famous director of the San Diego Zoo. It even served as a one-room elementary school! Today, it's a restaurant.
Theosophical Institute (Lomaland)
At 3900 Lomaland Drive, you can find the site of the Theosophical Institute. This was a unique community founded in 1897 by Katherine Tingley. It was a center for arts and new ideas. Today, this historic site is home to Point Loma Nazarene University. You can still see some of the original buildings like the Greek Theatre.
Rosecroft
Rosecroft, at 1530 Silvergate Avenue, is a stunning Italian Renaissance style house. It was built in 1912 for Alfred D. Robinson and Marion James Robinson. They were also famous for creating the amazing Rosecroft Begonia Gardens next door. These gardens were a popular tourist attraction in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s!
Kettenburg Boat Works
The site of the Kettenburg Boat Works at 1271 Scott Street and 2810 Carleton Street is a historic landmark. While the designation applies to the site itself and not the current buildings, it's important because this is where many famous Kettenburg boats were built. This place played a big role in San Diego's boating history.
Historic Places in Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach, or "OB" as locals call it, also has many historic spots, especially charming old homes and community buildings.
Ocean Beach Cottage Emerging District
The Ocean Beach Cottage Emerging District includes many different types of homes built between 1887 and 1931. These include Craftsman bungalows and cottages. They show the unique architectural style and history of the Ocean Beach neighborhood. Many individual houses within this district are also recognized as landmarks.
Strand Theatre
The Strand Theatre at 4948 Newport Avenue is a classic movie theater built in 1925. It's a reminder of how people used to enjoy movies and entertainment in Ocean Beach.
Ocean Beach Library
The Ocean Beach Library at 4801 Santa Monica Avenue is a beautiful building. It was built in 1928 in a Spanish/Monterey style. Libraries are important community hubs, and this one has served the people of Ocean Beach for nearly a century.
