The VR Troopers Team
Ryan Steele: The Leader
Ryan Steele is the leader of the VR Troopers. He is played by Brad Hawkins. Ryan is always looking for his father, Tyler Steele, who mysteriously disappeared. Ryan, along with his friends Kaitlin Star and J.B. Reese, were chosen by Professor Hart to become VR Troopers.
Ryan's father, Tyler, is connected to the evil Grimlord. Grimlord uses Tyler to try and take over the real world. Ryan often thinks about his father's lessons from a Buddhist Temple where he learned martial arts. Ryan wants to find his dad, but he also wants to keep his friends and their world safe.
In the first season, Ryan found out that one of Grimlord's cyborgs, Dark Heart, was actually his father, Tyler! Ryan managed to free his dad, but Grimlord captured Tyler again.
Ryan has special moves like the Lightning Hand Command. He also has cool vehicles, including a "Turbo Cycle." When there's an emergency, Ryan and his friends wear special suits to fight bad guys called Skugs. Ryan's special color is blue.
Later in the series, Ryan got new armor, powers, and vehicles like the Drill Tank and Nitro Cycle. He also got new weapons, including a laser pistol and a Laser Saber. His father even rebuilt the VR Skybase, which could turn into a giant robot called the VR Troopertron! Ryan's father left again to find a way to stop Grimlord for good. Ryan was left in charge until his father returned.
Ryan was the only Trooper to have two different uniforms during the show. His mother is never mentioned in the series.
J.B. Reese: The Tech Whiz
J.B. Reese is played by Michael Calvin Hollander. He is a super smart computer genius and a black belt in martial arts. J.B. loves technology and often tries to solve problems with it. But being a VR Trooper teaches him that life is more than just computers.
J.B. is a strong fighter. He uses a laser gun and a Laser Lance. He often uses the Laser Lance to finish off Grimlord's monsters. When he uses it, the monster usually gives up, gets "heartburn," or is not affected. If a monster gives up, J.B. still destroys it with quick slashes, making it explode.
J.B. also has the VR Techno-Bazooka, a big double-barrel cannon. He uses it to fight Grimlord's air forces. When a battle gets too dangerous in the real world, J.B. can activate a Vortex Command to move himself and the enemy into virtual reality. He also uses the VR Skybase and a battle cruiser. His special vehicle is the VR Fighter bike. J.B.'s special color is black.
The show never explained what J.B.'s initials stood for. His father appeared in a few episodes, but his mother was never seen or mentioned.
Kaitlin Star: The Reporter
Kaitlin Star is played by Sarah Brown. She works as a reporter and photographer for a newspaper called Underground Voice Daily. When she's not saving the world as a Trooper, she's reporting on important news.
As a Trooper, Kaitlin didn't have as many personal weapons as the boys. She used a hand pistol and sometimes a hatchet. Later, she gained a cool ability called "VR Kaitlin Double Team," where she could split into two! She often helped J.B. and Ryan from the VR Skybase or the VR Battle Cruiser.
Kaitlin could also share her power to help re-energize another Trooper. While she never finished off a monster by herself, she and J.B. often combined their laser blasts in a "VR Double Team" to stun and weaken enemies. She drives a Mazda Familia Hatchback that Professor Hart changed so it could fly! Unlike Ryan and J.B., Kaitlin's parents were never mentioned. Her special color is red.
Allies Who Help the Troopers
Jeb: The Talking Dog
Jeb is Ryan's pet Redbone Coonhound. He is voiced by Kerrigan Mahan who sounds a bit like Jack Nicholson. Jeb accidentally got special powers in the show's beginning, which allowed him to speak! Ryan made him promise not to talk around other people, so Jeb is usually quiet unless he's in the lab or making a funny comment to Percy.
Jeb is known for being mischievous and funny. He often provides comic relief and loves to play pranks on Percy and Mrs. Rooney. Jeb is also very hungry and will eat any food he finds! Even though he's silly, Jeb is a valuable helper to the Troopers. He sometimes shows off his tech skills and helps solve problems.
Professor Hart: The Mentor
Professor Horatio Hart is the Troopers' mentor. He is played by Julian Combs. He is a computer being who creates and provides all the cool weapons and equipment the Troopers use. Professor Hart used to be a human who worked with Ryan's father, Tyler Steele, on the VR Trooper project. But Grimlord badly injured him. To save him, Tyler put his brain into a computer.
In one episode, Professor Hart even gave Ryan his own Virtualizer so Ryan could fight an evil clone of himself!
Supporting Characters
- Tao Chong (played by Richard Rabago): Tao runs the Tao Dojo, a martial arts school. He is an old friend of Tyler Steele and the Troopers' sensei (teacher). Tao gives wise advice that often helps the Troopers, even though he doesn't know they are the VR Troopers. It seems like he might have guessed their secret identities.
- Woody Stocker (played by Michael Sorich): Woody is Kaitlin's funny boss at the Underground Voice Daily newspaper. His office is full of toys, and he always wears a different hat. He also likes to invent new snack recipes, some good (like nachos) and some very strange (like marshmallow or tuna-and-peanut-butter nachos!). His catchphrase is "What an ide-e-e-a!"
- Percival "Percy" Rooney III (played by Aaron Pruner): Percy is Kaitlin's rival at the newspaper. He is the nephew of Mayor Abner Rooney. Percy is allergic to many things, especially animals, which is why Jeb loves to prank him! Percy often tries to do better than Kaitlin at work, but he usually ends up in trouble. He is also a bit of a nerd.
- Tyler Steele (played by David Carr): Tyler is Ryan Steele's father. He was captured and brainwashed by Grimlord, becoming Grimlord's warrior, Dark Heart. Ryan worked hard to help his father remember who he was. After a lot of fighting and dangerous situations, Tyler was finally restored to his human form! However, Grimlord recaptured him. Tyler later helped Ryan get new powers and even built the VR Troopertron. He continued to search for a way to destroy Grimlord. His last appearance was in the Christmas episode "Santa's Secret Trooper."
- Young Ryan (played by Farrand Thompson): This is Ryan when he was younger. He is often seen at the beginning of each episode when Ryan remembers his past with his father. Young Ryan is usually training or doing fun activities with Tyler. In one episode, the Troopers were turned into 10-year-old kids and had to fight Grimlord's army with limited powers!
Villains
Other Characters
- Dr. Ulysses T. Poindexter (played by James Douglas): He is a quirky professor who accidentally helps the Troopers. He invented a virtual engine that helped create J.B.'s VR Fighter Bike. He also helped when the Troopers' Virtualizers were broken. Even though his memory was erased so he wouldn't know their secret, he continued to be helpful.
- Mayor Abner Rooney (played by Randy Swerdlick): He is the mayor of Cross World City and Percy's uncle. Mayor Rooney is in charge, but he can be a bit weak and easily bossed around by Ziktor or his wife. He supports the VR Troopers.
- Mrs. Prudence Rooney (played by Sonja Ecker): She is the Mayor's wife and Percy's aunt. She is quite a snobby woman. Jeb often plays pranks on her. She did not appear in the second season.
- Strickland (played by Glen McDougal): Strickland is a Skug who works for Ziktor Industries as an inventor. He often bothers Karl Ziktor with new inventions to use against the Troopers. He created devices that turned the Troopers into children and even turned J.B. into a monster! He also created a love potion in chocolates and helped turn a convict into a monster.
