List of commissioners of Bechuanaland facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Bechuanaland Protectorate was a large area in Southern Africa that was under British rule for many years. It became fully independent in 1966 and is now known as Botswana.

During the time it was a British protectorate, it was managed by special leaders called commissioners. These commissioners were like the main representatives of the British government in the area. Their job was to oversee the land and its people.

The title of these leaders changed over time:

  • From 1885 to 1891, they were called the Deputy Commissioner.
  • From 1891 to 1964, they were known as the Resident Commissioner.
  • From 1964 until Botswana gained independence, they were called the Queen's Commissioner.

Below is a list of the people who held these important roles. Dates shown in italic mean that the person continued in their role even if the official title or status of the territory changed slightly.
