List of districts of Delhi facts for kids
Delhi, India, is divided into eleven main areas called districts. These districts help manage the city and its people. Each district is led by an officer called a District Magistrate (DM), also known as a Deputy Commissioner (DC). This officer reports to the Divisional Commissioner. The eleven districts are further divided into 33 smaller parts called sub-divisions, each with its own leader, a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).
The district administration in Delhi makes sure that the Government of Delhi's plans and rules are put into action. They also oversee many other government workers.
New Delhi is the capital of India. It is where the main parts of the government are located. This includes the President's house (Rashtrapati Bhavan), the Parliament (Sansad Bhavan), and the highest court (Supreme Court). Just like the administrative districts, Delhi also has 15 Police Districts. Each police district is led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). These 15 police districts are split into 66 police sub-divisions, each led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
How Delhi's Administration Grew
The way Delhi is managed today started during the time of British India (1858–1947). In 1911, during the Delhi Durbar, the capital of India was moved from Calcutta to New Delhi. Later, in November 1956, Delhi became a special area called a union territory.
In 1991, a change to India's Constitution officially renamed Delhi as the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT of Delhi).
In the 1970s, Delhi had only four administrative districts. These were North, South, Central, and New Delhi. Between 1997 and 2012, the city had nine administrative districts and 27 sub-divisions. In September 2012, two new districts were added: South-East Delhi and Shahdara. This brought the total to eleven districts.
In 1978, the Delhi Police Act was passed. This law gave more power to the Commissioner of Delhi Police regarding law and order.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was first created in April 1958. It handled city services like roads and sanitation. In January 2012, the MCD was split into three separate corporations. However, in 2022, these three corporations were merged back into one Municipal Corporation of Delhi. This single corporation is now led by a Municipal Commissioner.
