Discovering Paradise Valley's Past

Paradise Valley started as a farming area. A man named Frank Conkey gave the place its name in the 1880s. He was in charge of surveying the land for a company that wanted to create farms.

After World War II, more and more people moved to the area. These new residents formed a group to make Paradise Valley an official town. On May 24, 1961, their wish came true, and Paradise Valley became an incorporated town.

Famous Homes and Buildings

The Edward L. Jones House was built in 1925. It is the first and only property in Paradise Valley listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's officially recognized as an important historic site. Edward L. Jones and his wife moved to Arizona in 1930. They bought land that would later become part of Paradise Valley.

Barry Goldwater was a famous Arizona Senator. He even ran for President of the United States in 1964. Goldwater had his house built in 1952 on a place called Scorpion Hill. The house was made from sandstone. His ashes, and those of his wife, are buried in the "Goldwater crypt." This crypt is in the Memorial Garden at the Christ Church of the Ascension.

Two houses in Paradise Valley were designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. One is the Harold C. Price Sr. House, built in 1956. The other is the Norman Lykes House, which was the last house Wright designed before he passed away. Its construction started in 1959 and finished in 1967.

The historic Paradise Valley Methodist Church was built in 1960. Its beautiful chapel, with its stained glass window, was added in 1964. Both the church and chapel were shown on a 1960s TV show about the Phoenix area.

The cartoonist Bil Keane and his wife Thelma lived in Paradise Valley. Bil Keane created the popular comic strip The Family Circus. His wife, Thelma, was the inspiration for the "Mommy" character in his comics.

The McCune Mansion/Hormel Mansion is a very large house built in 1967. It sits on top of Sugar Loaf Mountain. It was first built for Walter McCune, but later sold to George Hormel. At 52,000 square feet, it's one of the biggest private homes in the United States!
