Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba is a very important person in the province of Manitoba, Canada. They are the King's or Queen's representative in Manitoba. This means they act on behalf of the monarch, like King Charles III, in the province.

The job of the Lieutenant Governor is to make sure the government works properly and follows the rules. They officially open new sessions of the provincial parliament, give royal approval to new laws, and are the commander-in-chief of the province's military reserves. They also represent the province at many events and ceremonies.

The office of the Lieutenant Governor in Manitoba started when the province joined Canada in 1870. However, the role is a continuation of the first governorship of the Northwest Territories, which began in 1869.
