The Marshall Islands are a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. Even though they are small, they are home to many interesting animals! This article tells you about the mammals that live there.

You might be surprised to learn that there is only one type of land mammal living naturally on the Marshall Islands, besides humans. But in the ocean around the islands, there are many amazing marine mammals. Scientists have found 27 different kinds of marine mammals here, mostly whales and dolphins. One of these, the humpback whale, is considered a vulnerable species, meaning it needs our help to protect it.

Mammals on Land

The only land mammal that lives naturally on the Marshall Islands (apart from people) is the Polynesian rat (Rattus exulans). These small rats are sometimes called Pacific rats. They are much smaller than other common rats. They are good climbers and often live in trees.

Marine Mammals of the Marshall Islands

The waters around the Marshall Islands are full of life! You can find 27 different kinds of marine mammals here. Most of these are whales, dolphins, and porpoises. They swim through the warm ocean waters, looking for food and raising their young.

Whales in the Ocean

Many types of whales visit or live near the Marshall Islands. These include some of the biggest animals on Earth!

  • Humpback whale: These huge whales are famous for their amazing songs and acrobatic jumps. They travel long distances.
  • Ginkgo-toothed beaked whale: This whale is a bit of a mystery. It lives in deep waters and is rarely seen.
  • Blainville's beaked whale: Another deep-diving whale, known for its unique teeth that stick out from its mouth.
  • Blue whale: The largest animal on Earth! Blue whales can grow up to 30 meters long.
  • Sei whale: These fast swimmers are known for their sleek bodies.
  • Fin whale: The second-largest whale, often called the "greyhound of the sea" because of its speed.
  • Sperm whale: These whales have huge heads and dive very deep to hunt for squid.

Dolphins Swimming Free

Dolphins are smart and playful marine mammals. Several kinds of dolphins live in the waters around the Marshall Islands.

  • Spinner dolphin: These dolphins are famous for leaping out of the water and spinning in the air! They often travel in large groups.
  • Fraser's dolphin: These dolphins have a unique look with dark stripes on their sides. They also prefer deep waters.
  • Long-beaked common dolphin: These active dolphins are known for their long, slender beaks. They often ride the bow waves of boats.
  • Pygmy killer whale: Despite their name, these are actually a type of dolphin. They are smaller than true killer whales but are strong hunters.
