The prime minister of Haiti is a very important leader in Haiti. This person is the head of government, which means they lead the country's day-to-day operations. In Haitian French, this role is called Premier ministre d'Haïti, and in Haitian Creole, it's Premye Minis Ayiti.

This job was created in 1987 with Haiti's new Constitution. Before that, the president had all the main power and led the group of government ministers. Right now, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé is serving as the acting prime minister, starting on November 10, 2024.

How a Prime Minister Is Chosen

The prime minister of Haiti is chosen in a special way. First, the president picks someone for the job. After that, the chosen person needs to be approved by the National Assembly, which is Haiti's main law-making group.

What the Prime Minister Does

The prime minister has many important duties and powers. They work closely with the president to run the country.

Here are some of their main jobs:

  • Appointing Ministers: The prime minister chooses the different ministers and secretaries of state. These are people who lead specific parts of the government, like education or health. They make these choices after talking with the president.
  • Getting Approval: After choosing their team, the prime minister goes to the National Assembly. They present their plans for how they will lead the country. The National Assembly then votes to show if they trust the prime minister and their plans. This is called a "vote of confidence."
  • Enforcing Laws: The prime minister makes sure that the country's laws are followed.
  • National Defense: Along with the president, the prime minister is responsible for keeping Haiti safe and protecting it from threats.
  • Overseeing Government Purchases: The prime minister also looks after the National Commission on Government Procurement (CNMP). This group helps make sure that the government buys things fairly and correctly.

Longest-Serving Prime Ministers

Some prime ministers have served for a long time in Haiti's history.

  • Gérard Latortue served the longest, staying in office for 1,550 days.
  • Jacques-Édouard Alexis served the second-longest. He was prime minister for 1,526 days over two different times. He also holds the record for the longest time served by a prime minister who was chosen by an elected president.
