Crisis helplines are special phone numbers you can call when you are feeling very sad, worried, or overwhelmed. They are available in many countries around the world. Studies in places like the United States and Australia show that these helplines can really help people who are struggling. They can make people feel better and less alone.
One of the very first helplines was called the Samaritans. It started in the United Kingdom in 1953. A kind person named Chad Varah, who was a church leader, decided to create a "listening service." He had read about a 14-year-old girl who was very upset and had no one to talk to before she passed away. He wanted to make sure others had someone to listen to them.
How Crisis Helplines Help You
Crisis helplines are there to offer support when you need it most. They are often available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can talk to trained people who will listen without judging you. They can help you understand your feelings and find ways to cope. These services are usually free and confidential, meaning what you say stays private.
Who Can You Talk To?
When you call a crisis helpline, you might talk to:
- Volunteers who are trained to listen and support.
- Professional counselors or psychologists.
- People who understand what you are going through.
They can help with many different feelings, like:
- Feeling very sad or down.
- Feeling anxious or worried a lot.
- Feeling lonely or isolated.
- Feeling overwhelmed by problems.
- Needing someone to talk to about big emotions.
