Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Croydon is a busy town in South London, England. It's known for its many tall buildings and structures. This article lists the highest ones in Croydon, showing how tall they are. Croydon used to be a market town, making things like charcoal and leather. Now, it's a lively part of Greater London with lots of people living there.

History of Croydon's Tall Buildings

Unlike many other tall buildings in London, most of Croydon's high-rises were built in the 1960s and 1970s. This was part of a big plan to create lots of office space outside of Central London.

Over time, some of these older office buildings became outdated. Some were even taken down to make way for new, modern skyscrapers. More recently, a new plan called Croydon Vision 2020 was announced. This plan aimed to redevelop the town centre. Since then, Croydon has seen many new tall apartment buildings go up, like IYLO and Altitude 25. These often replaced old, unused land.

For 38 years, the tallest building in Croydon was No. 1 Croydon (also known as the NLA Tower). It was finished in 1970. But in 2009, Altitude 25, a residential building, became the tallest. Then, in 2016, Saffron Square took the top spot at 134 metres tall. However, it was soon beaten by 101 George Street in 2019. The current tallest building is College Road, which was completed in 2022. It stands at 149 metres and is also Europe's tallest building made from pre-built sections.

In 2022, there was a discussion about new skyscrapers in Croydon. Some local leaders felt that Croydon should not try to look like New York City with too many tall buildings.

Tallest Structures

A "structure" is different from a "building" because it usually doesn't have many floors or places for people to live or work. It's more like a tower or a mast. Here are the two tallest structures in Croydon.
