List of tallest buildings in Columbus, Ohio facts for kids
The city of Columbus, Ohio, is home to many tall buildings! The very tallest one is the Rhodes State Office Tower. It stands 41 stories high, reaching about 629 feet (192 meters) into the sky. It was finished in 1973. This building is the fifth tallest in the whole state of Ohio. It's also the tallest building in Ohio that stands right in the middle of a city block, not on a corner.
The second tallest building in Columbus is the LeVeque Tower. This amazing 1927 building has a special style called Art Deco. It was the first building in Ohio to be built on very strong foundations called caissons, which are like deep, strong pillars. Out of the 20 tallest buildings in Ohio, nine of them are right here in Columbus!
The story of skyscrapers in Columbus started in 1901 with the 16 East Broad Street building. It was 13 stories tall and about 180 feet (55 meters) high. Columbus had a big building boom in the 1920s. That's when the 555-foot (169-meter) LeVeque Tower was built. It was the tallest building in Columbus for 46 years! After that, not many tall buildings were built until 1960. Then, Columbus had another huge building boom that lasted until 1991. During this time, many of the city's tallest skyscrapers were built, including the Rhodes State Office Tower and the William Green Building.
Even though Columbus doesn't have the very tallest skyscrapers in the United States, it has five buildings that are at least 492 feet (150 meters) tall. If you look at buildings that are already built or are being built that are over 500 feet (152 meters) tall, Columbus's skyline is tied with Cleveland for the tallest in Ohio. It's also fourth in the Midwest (after Chicago, Minneapolis, and Detroit) and 19th in the whole country. As of June 2023, Columbus has 114 tall buildings. Columbus is third in Ohio for the number of tall buildings, after Cleveland and Cincinnati.
Between 1991 and 2010, not many new tall buildings were constructed in Columbus. Some notable ones built during this time include the Fifth Third Center in 1998, the 314-foot (96-meter) Miranova Condominiums in 2002 (which is the tallest home building in the city), and The Condominiums at North Bank Park in 2007.
Since 2011, downtown Columbus and nearby areas have seen a lot of new tall buildings. These include the 250 High building, the Hilton Columbus Downtown hotel, and a new Columbia Gas Building. There are also many new tall buildings being planned or built in the downtown area right now.
