What Does This Frog Look Like?
This frog is quite small. Adult male frogs are usually about 2.7 to 2.8 centimeters long. Female frogs are a bit bigger, measuring about 3.2 to 3.6 centimeters long.
Big Eyes and Unique Features
The Litoria megalops has very large eyes for its size. This is why scientists named it megalops, which means "large eyes" in an old language. Its front feet do not have webs between the toes. However, its back feet are webbed, which helps it swim. This frog also has tiny teeth on its upper jaw.
Frog Colors
These frogs can come in different colors. Some are a yellow-brown color, like the gemstone amber. These frogs often have a green mark above each eye and a green stripe along their body. Other Litoria megalops frogs are a bright orange color.
Where Does This Frog Live?
Scientists found this frog living high up, about 1070 meters (or about 3,500 feet) above sea level. They discovered it only in the fast-moving parts of a river called the Wapona River. Because it lives in such quick water, it is called a "torrent-dwelling frog." Scientists also checked nearby streams where the water moved slowly, but they did not find this frog there. This shows it prefers very fast-flowing water.
Life Cycle and Reproduction
The Litoria megalops lays eggs that are clear. It places its eggs carefully underneath rocks at the bottom of streams.
Tadpole Features
When the eggs hatch, the tadpoles come out. These tadpoles have flat bodies. They also have special suckers on their mouths. These suckers help them hold onto rocks in the fast-moving water, so they don't get washed away.
