The Litoria sauroni is a fascinating tree frog that lives in Papua New Guinea. It's sometimes called the "Eye of Sauron frog" because of its striking red-and-black eyes, which remind people of the famous eye from The Lord of the Rings books. Scientists have only found this unique frog in a special protected area called the Kikori Integrate Conservation and Development Project.

The Eye of Sauron Frog

This amazing frog is quite small, like many tree frogs. Its most noticeable feature is its eyes, which are a bright red with a black center, making them look very dramatic. Besides its eyes, the Litoria sauroni also has special pads on its front feet. These are called nuptial pads.

Where This Frog Lives

The Litoria sauroni has only been seen in one specific part of the world: the Kikori Integrate Conservation and Development Project area in Papua New Guinea. This area is known for its rich rainforests and many different kinds of animals and plants. Because it's only found in this one spot, it's very important to protect its home.

What Are Nuptial Pads?

Nuptial pads are special rough patches that male frogs develop on their front feet, usually during the breeding season. These pads help the male frog hold onto the female during mating. They can be quite sticky or bumpy, giving the male a better grip. For the Litoria sauroni, these pads are another interesting feature that helps scientists identify it.

Naming the Frog

When scientists discover a new animal, they give it a scientific name. The Litoria sauroni was first described in 2006 by scientists Richards and Oliver. The name "sauroni" was chosen because of its distinctive red-and-black eyes, which reminded them of the Eye of Sauron.

Sometimes, scientists disagree about which group, or "genus," a species should belong to. For the Litoria sauroni, some scientists think it belongs in the genus Litoria, while others believe it should be in the genus Nyctimystes. This kind of discussion is a normal part of how science works as new information is discovered!
