The Little Black River is a small but important stream located in Cheboygan County, in the state of Michigan. It's about 6.1 miles (9.8 kilometers) long. This river starts in a place called Beaugrand Township and flows generally eastward. Its journey ends when it empties into Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes, right in the city of Cheboygan. It joins Lake Huron very close to where the larger Cheboygan River also flows in.

About the Little Black River

Rivers like the Little Black River are natural flowing waterways. They usually flow towards an ocean, lake, or another river. The Little Black River is a good example of a smaller river that plays a part in a much larger water system. It helps carry water from the land into Lake Huron.

Where Does It Flow?

The Little Black River begins its journey in Beaugrand Township. This is a rural area in northern Michigan. From there, the river flows mostly towards the east. It travels through different landscapes before reaching its final destination. The river's path takes it through parts of Cheboygan County.

Its mouth, or where it ends, is in the city of Cheboygan. This city is located right on the shores of Lake Huron. The river's water mixes with the vast waters of Lake Huron. Lake Huron is one of the five Great Lakes, which are huge freshwater lakes in North America.

What Are Tributaries?

A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger stream or river. Think of it like a branch joining a main tree trunk. The Little Black River has its own tributaries that add water to it. These smaller streams help make the Little Black River bigger as it flows towards Lake Huron.

Main Tributaries

The Little Black River has two main tributaries that flow into it from its left side (if you were looking downstream, or in the direction the river flows):

  • The South Branch Little Black River
  • The West Branch Little Black River

These branches collect water from different areas and bring it into the main Little Black River. This system helps drain water from the surrounding land.

Why Are Rivers Important?

Rivers are super important for many reasons. They provide fresh water for plants, animals, and people. They also create habitats for many different kinds of wildlife. Fish, insects, and birds often rely on rivers for their homes and food. Rivers can also be used for fun activities like fishing or kayaking. The Little Black River, though small, contributes to the health of the local environment and the larger Lake Huron ecosystem.
