Past Residents and History
Long ago, the Maidu Native American tribe used to live in Little Grass Valley during the summer months.
Later, during the exciting time of the California Gold Rush, Little Grass Valley became a place where gold miners set up camp. This mining camp disappeared before the year 1900, but you can still find old gold mines in the area.
Before the lake was created, the valley land was used for grazing cattle. There was even a Boy Scout Camp located right by the South Fork of the Feather River.
In 1963, a big change happened: the whole valley was flooded on purpose to create a large lake. Today, this lake is called Little Grass Valley Reservoir.
Things to Do in Little Grass Valley
Today, Little Grass Valley is a popular spot for outdoor fun.
- You can find many campgrounds all around the lake.
- There are also cabins on the south side of the lake.
- In winter, it becomes a center for snowmobiling.
Little Grass Valley is about three miles (5 kilometers) from a small town called La Porte, which has a population of about 43 people.
Fowler Lake: A Nearby Gem
About 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) north of Little Grass Valley Lake, there's a small, natural pond called Fowler Lake. It's known for its beautiful lily pads. This peaceful lake sits at an altitude of about 5,446 feet (1,660 meters).
