Little Gull Island facts for kids
Little Gull Island is a tiny island in Long Island Sound. It's located about 0.6 kilometers (0.4 miles) northeast of Great Gull Island. Both of these islands are part of the Town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York. They sit roughly in the middle of the water between Plum Island and Fishers Island.
Little Gull Island is about 7.4 kilometers (4.6 miles) southwest of Fishers Island. The channel of water between them is very important. It's the main entrance to Long Island Sound and is known as The Race.

Little Gull Island is a very small, rocky island. It's only about 1 acre (4,000 square meters) in size. A large part of this small island is taken up by the Little Gull Island Lighthouse. This lighthouse is a famous landmark in the area.
The Little Gull Island Lighthouse
The lighthouse on Little Gull Island is a historic structure. It helps guide ships safely through The Race. The first lighthouse was built here in 1806. Later, a new, taller lighthouse was built in 1869. This newer lighthouse is the one you see today. It's an important part of the island's history and helps sailors navigate the busy waters of Long Island Sound.
