Exploring the Little River
River's Journey
The Little River begins in Floyd County, Virginia. It actually starts from two different branches near the Blue Ridge Parkway. As it flows, the river forms part of the border between Floyd and Montgomery counties. Later, it flows along the border of Pulaski and Montgomery counties. Finally, the Little River joins the New River near the city of Radford. This happens just below the Claytor Lake dam.
Paddling and Fishing
The Little River is a popular spot for paddling, like kayaking or canoeing. The best times to go are usually in the spring or after heavy rains. The river has different sections with varying levels of difficulty. Some parts have easy rapids (Class 1 and 2). There are also a couple of more challenging rapids (Class 3) and one very difficult rapid (Class 4). Many parts of the river are stocked with trout by the Virginia Division of Game and Inland Fisheries. This means it's a great place for fishing!
