The Courthouse Story
How Little River County Started
Little River County was created in 1867. It was formed from a part of Sevier County. When a new county is made, it needs a main town. This main town is called the county seat.
Moving the County Seat
The first county seat for Little River County was Alleene. This was in 1867. Later, in 1880, the county seat moved to Richmond.
A Fire and a New Start
In 1882, the courthouse in Richmond sadly burned down. The people of Richmond wanted the county offices to stay in their town. So, they worked together and rebuilt the courthouse for free! The county government stayed in Richmond for a while.
The Courthouse Finds a New Home
In 1902, the county seat moved again. This time, it went to a place called Rocky Comfort. But it didn't stay there for long. In 1906, people voted again. They decided to move the county seat to Ashdown. The very next year, in 1907, the courthouse you see today was built in Ashdown.
