Little Wobby is a small suburb located on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. It sits on the northern side of the Hawkesbury River. This area is managed by the Central Coast Council. It's interesting because Little Wobby is the very southernmost tip of the NSW Central Coast region!

A Look Back: Little Wobby's Past

Little Wobby has an interesting past, especially during World War II. The Australian military, known as the Commonwealth Military Forces, used this area. They built several structures along the shoreline. These buildings were designed to hold powerful cannons, called artillery batteries. The cannons were meant to protect against a possible invasion by Japanese forces. This defense would have guarded Broken Bay and the Hawkesbury River.

Wartime Defenses and Changes

To further protect the river, a special net was placed across it. This "submarine net" was designed to stop enemy submarines from entering. After the war ended, two of these military buildings were changed into homes. They are still used as houses today.

In the 1970s, there was a plan for the government to buy all the properties along the shore. The idea was to remove the houses and restore the land. The goal was to make it part of the national park again. However, this plan never happened.

Modern Utilities in Little Wobby

Even today, homes in Little Wobby have limited public services. They have telephone and electricity connections. However, they do not have town water or a public sewage system. Instead, residents use water tanks to collect rainwater. They also use septic tanks to manage wastewater. Interestingly, the phone numbers in Little Wobby use the Sydney (02) 9XXX-XXXX area code. This is different from the (02) 434X-XXXX numbers used in most of the Central Coast.

Exploring Little Wobby's Geography

Little Wobby is a narrow strip of land, about 1.5 kilometers (just under 1 mile) long, along the Hawkesbury River. It is located about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) east of Dangar Island. There are only a few homes here. Most of these houses are used as holiday homes rather than permanent residences.

Accessing the Area

One unique thing about Little Wobby is how you get there. There are no roads leading into the area. This means the only way to reach the properties is by boat!

Nature and Recreation

Most of Little Wobby is part of the Broken Bay Sport and Recreation Centre. This is a large 4 square kilometer (about 1.5 square miles) area of natural bushland. It is located near the mouth of the Hawkesbury River. The center offers several walking trails for visitors to explore. One popular trail is the Highway Ridge Trail. This path goes close to the residential area. It also extends north into the beautiful Brisbane Water National Park.
