Littleton Wilde Moore (born March 25, 1835 – died October 29, 1911) was an important American politician. He served as a U.S. Representative for the state of Texas. This means he was elected to speak for the people of Texas in the United States government.
Life and Early Career
Littleton Wilde Moore was born in Marion County, Alabama, in 1835. When he was just one year old, his family moved to Mississippi in 1836.
Moore was a very good student. He went to the University of Mississippi at Oxford and finished his studies in 1855. After college, he decided to become a lawyer. He studied law and was allowed to practice as a lawyer in 1857. This is called being "admitted to the bar."
Later in 1857, Moore moved to Texas and started his law practice in a town called Bastrop.
Serving During the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Littleton Moore joined the Confederate States Army. He served as a captain throughout the entire war.
Political Journey
After the Civil War, Moore continued his public service. In 1875, he was elected to the State constitutional convention. This was a special meeting where leaders decided how the state's government would be set up.
From 1876 to 1885, Moore worked as a district judge. A district judge is a person who makes decisions in court cases for a specific area or "district."
Serving in Congress
Littleton Moore was a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives three times in a row. He served in the Fiftieth, Fifty-first, and Fifty-second Congresses. His time in Congress lasted from March 4, 1887, to March 3, 1893.
After his time in Congress, he went back to working as a lawyer. In 1901, he was again appointed as a judge for the twenty-second judicial district. He continued to serve as a judge until he passed away.
Littleton Wilde Moore died in La Grange, Texas, on October 29, 1911. He was buried in the City Cemetery there.
