Liu Yunshan (born in July 1947) is a retired Chinese politician. He was a very important member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. This group is the top decision-making body in China. From 2012 to 2017, he helped manage the party's main office, called the Secretariat. His work included overseeing how information was shared and how the party was organized. He also served as the head of the Central Party School.

Liu started his career in a region called Inner Mongolia. He worked as a teacher and then as a reporter for Xinhua News Agency. Later, he joined the Communist Youth League and worked in the Inner Mongolia party's communication department. He was also the Party Secretary for the city of Chifeng for a short time. From 2002 to 2012, Liu was the head of the Central Propaganda Department. He retired from his political roles in 2017.

Early Life and Career

Liu Yunshan was born into a regular farming family in Tumed Qi in Inner Mongolia. His family originally came from Xinzhou, Shanxi province. He spent more than 20 years of his career working in Inner Mongolia. He became a member of the Communist Party in 1971.

He first worked as a teacher. During a time called the Cultural Revolution, he was sent to the countryside to do manual labor. He also studied part-time at the Teachers College in Jining District. In 1975, he became a reporter for Xinhua News Agency. He wrote stories about farmers in Inner Mongolia, sometimes even sleeping in their traditional homes called yurts to understand their lives better. He was later promoted to a leadership role.

Liu then worked for the Communist Youth League in Inner Mongolia. In 1985, when he was 38, he became an alternate member of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. This was a big step in his career. By 1987, he was the Secretary-General of the Inner Mongolia Party committee. This role meant he helped make sure political plans were carried out.

From 1989 to 1992, Liu attended the Central Party School. Here, he took courses to learn more about how to manage public affairs. In 1991, he became the Party Secretary of Chifeng, a city in eastern Inner Mongolia. He was also part of the Autonomous Region's Party Standing Committee, which made him a very powerful official in Inner Mongolia. From 1993 to 2002, he worked in Beijing as a deputy head of the Central Public Relation Department.

Leadership Roles in China

In 2002, at the 16th Party Congress, Liu Yunshan became the head of the Central Propaganda Department. He also joined the Politburo, which is a group of top leaders. He was also a Secretary of the Secretariat, another important party office. He continued to be a member of the 17th Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party.

After the 18th Party Congress in November 2012, Liu was chosen for the 18th Politburo and its Standing Committee. This made him one of the most powerful people in China. He took on many important roles, including being the First Secretary of the Secretariat. This role was previously held by Xi Jinping, who became the party leader. Liu was known for believing in strong party control over information and ideas.

Liu played a big part in promoting ideas like the China Dream and Xi Jinping Thought. He also helped lead efforts to make the party stronger and fight against bad behavior within the party. For example, in 2013, he attended a special meeting in Shanxi province when many top leaders there were removed from their positions. This was unusual, as usually a different official would attend such a meeting.

In November 2013, Liu announced that the Central Party School would start a training program. This program focused on the important speeches and ideas of General Secretary Xi Jinping. Within a year, 2,300 party officials had completed this training.

In 2015, Liu led a Chinese group on a visit to North Korea. He met with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un. This was the first time such a high-ranking Chinese official had met with Kim Jong-un. Liu delivered a personal letter from China's party leader, Xi Jinping. Liu and Kim showed their friendship by embracing in front of cameras. Liu also watched a military parade with the North Korean leader.

Because of his wide influence over communication and ideas, Liu also met with leaders of global technology companies. He met with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in March 2016 and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in November 2016. Liu Yunshan retired from his political roles at the 19th Party Congress in 2017.

Family Life
