Satya Nadella (born in 1967) is a very important leader in the technology world. He is the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Microsoft. He became the CEO in 2014. In 2021, he also became the chairman of the company. Before leading Microsoft, he worked a lot with their cloud computing services. He helped build some of the world's biggest computer systems.

Early Life and School

Satya Nadella was born in 1967 in Hyderabad, India. His family was Telugu and Hindu. His mother, Prabhavati, taught Sanskrit. His father, Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandhar, worked for the government.

Nadella went to the Hyderabad Public School. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1988. He studied at the Manipal Institute of Technology in India.

After that, he moved to the United States. He earned a master's degree in computer science in 1990. He studied at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Later, in 1997, he earned a business degree (an MBA). He got this from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Starting His Career

Before joining Microsoft, Nadella worked at Sun Microsystems. He was part of their technology team there. He joined Microsoft in 1992.

At Microsoft, Nadella led many big projects. He helped the company focus on cloud computing. This means storing and using data over the internet, not just on your own computer. He helped build one of the world's largest cloud systems.

He worked as a senior leader in different parts of Microsoft. He helped change Microsoft's focus. It moved from regular software to cloud services. He is known for bringing Microsoft's database and Windows Server to its Azure cloud platform.

When he took over cloud services in 2011, they made $16.6 billion. By June 2013, this grew to $20.3 billion.

Becoming the CEO

On February 4, 2014, Satya Nadella became the new CEO of Microsoft. He was the third CEO in the company's history. The first two were Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer.

Under Nadella, Microsoft started working with companies they used to compete with. These include Apple Inc., Salesforce, and IBM. He famously said, "Microsoft ❤️ Linux." This showed a big change in how Microsoft worked with others. Microsoft even joined the Linux Foundation in 2016.

Nadella changed Microsoft's main goal. It became "empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more." He also changed the company's culture. He wanted people to understand others and always keep learning new things.

Big Company Purchases

Nadella led Microsoft to buy several other companies. In 2014, Microsoft bought Mojang for $2.5 billion. Mojang is the company that made the popular game Minecraft. He also helped buy LinkedIn in 2016 for $26.2 billion. In 2018, Microsoft bought GitHub for $7.5 billion.

Since Nadella became CEO in 2014, Microsoft's stock has grown a lot. By November 2023, it had increased almost tenfold. This shows how much the company has grown.

Sports and Other Roles

Nadella is part of a group that bought the Seattle Orcas cricket team. This team plays in the 2023 Major League Cricket season. He also partly owns the Seattle Sounders FC. This is a soccer club in Major League Soccer.

He has also served on important boards. For example, he was on the Board of Directors for Starbucks. He was also on the Board of Trustees for the University of Chicago.

Awards and Honors

Satya Nadella has received many honors. He was named to the Time 100 list in 2018 and 2024. This list features the most influential people in the world. In 2019, he was named Financial Times Person of the Year. Fortune Magazine also named him Businessperson of the Year.

In 2022, the Government of India gave him the Padma Bhushan. This is one of India's highest awards for citizens. In January 2024, he received an honorary Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

His Family Life

In 1992, Nadella married Anupama Priyadarshini. She studied architecture. They have three children, two daughters and a son. Their son passed away. They live in Clyde Hill and Bellevue, Washington.

His son, Zain, had cerebral palsy and was legally blind. Zain passed away in February 2022 when he was 26 years old. Nadella has said that being a father to a child with special needs changed his life.

Nadella enjoys reading American and Indian poetry. He also loves cricket and played on his school team. He believes cricket helped him learn leadership skills.

His Book

In 2017, Nadella wrote a book called Hit Refresh. The book shares his life story and his time at Microsoft. He announced that all profits from the book would go to charity.
