Liutgarde of Saxony (born 932, died 953) was a princess from a very important German family called the Ottonian dynasty. She became the Duchess of Lorraine when she married Duke Conrad the Red in 947. Together, Liutgarde and Conrad started a new royal family line known as the Salian dynasty.

Her Royal Life

Liutgarde was the only daughter of King Otto I of Germany from his first marriage. Her mother was Edith of England. In 947, King Otto arranged for Liutgarde to marry Conrad the Red. This marriage helped to create stronger ties with the Salian family. Conrad had been made the Duke of Lorraine by King Otto just a few years before.

Family and Challenges

Liutgarde and Conrad's marriage was not always easy. Around the year 950, Liutgarde gave birth to their son, Otto of Worms.

In 951, Liutgarde's husband, Conrad, joined King Otto on a trip to Italy. However, Conrad and King Otto later had disagreements about some agreements made with King Berengar II of Italy.

A Difficult Time

Liutgarde passed away in 953 in a city called Mainz. At that time, her husband, Conrad the Red, had joined a rebellion. This rebellion was led by Liutgarde's older brother, Duke Liudolf of Swabia, and Archbishop Frederick. Liutgarde was buried in St. Alban's Abbey, Mainz.

The next year, Duke Conrad finally made peace with King Otto. He remained a loyal supporter until he died in 955 at the Battle of Lechfeld. Liutgarde's brother, Liudolf, died two years later while on a trip to Italy.

Her Family's Legacy

When Emperor Otto I died in 973, the Empire was passed down through his second wife. Their son, Otto II, became the next emperor.

Liutgarde's brother Liudolf had a son named Otto I. He became the Duke of Swabia. Liutgarde's own son, Otto of Worms, became the Duke of Carinthia in 978.

Later, in 1002, when Emperor Otto III died, Liutgarde's son Otto of Worms was considered as a possible new king. However, he decided to step aside for another member of the Ottonian family, Henry IV of Bavaria. Henry was a grandson of Emperor Otto I's brother.

After Henry's death, Liutgarde's great-grandson, Conrad II, was chosen to be the King of the Romans. He was the very first king from the Salian dynasty, which Liutgarde and her husband had started.
