Ljunghusen is a small town in Sweden. It is located in Vellinge Municipality, which is part of Skåne County. In 2010, about 2,555 people lived here.

Ljunghusen is found west of Höllviken and east of Skanör-Falsterbo. It's famous for its lovely beaches. It also has a great golf course called Ljunghusens GK. This course has often been ranked among the top five in Sweden!

Did you know Ljunghusen used to have a train station? It was open from 1904 to 1971. For a while, from 1905 to 1924, a special horse-drawn track ran from the station to the beach.

The Story Behind the Name

Ljunghusen got its name from two old houses. These houses were built in the early 1800s. They were located north of the main road to Skanör-Falsterbo.

In 1837, these two houses were already called "Ljunghusen" in official records. This means "The heather houses." They were named after the huge area covered with heather nearby. This area is now a nature reserve called "Skanörs Ljung". The original two houses are no longer there.

Norra and Södra Ljunghuset

Close to Ljunghusen, in the next parish, there are two other old houses. They are called Norra Ljunghuset (Northern Heather house) and Södra Ljunghuset (Southern Heather house).

Norra Ljunghuset was built in 1796. Södra Ljunghuset was built in 1850. These houses were built by Skanör-Falsterbo. They were used as homes for gatekeepers and shepherds. These people looked after the town's eastern border across the heath.

Norra Ljunghuset used to be the last building before the big heath. Today, Ljunghusen has grown, but this house is still the last one on the main road. Long ago, there was even a secret pub in the building! People told stories about a "Gya troll" from the heath. Today, a road is named Lönnkrogsvägen (Speakeasy road). There's also an area in Höllviken called "Gya." Norra Ljunghuset was partly damaged by fire in 1950. But it was fixed and a family lives there now.

Södra Ljunghuset was used as a clubhouse for the local golf club, Ljunghusens GK. This was from when the club started in 1932 until 1965. That's when their new clubhouse was ready. Today, this house is a workshop for the golf club's greenkeepers. It also has an apartment, often used by someone who works for the golf club.

Exploring Ljunghusen's Areas

Ljunghusen has different parts, each with its own feel.

Ljungskogens Strandbad: A Forest Feel

The westernmost part of Ljunghusen is called Ljungskogens strandbad. You can reach it by Storvägen. This area is special!

  • The roads are not paved.
  • There are no street lights.
  • All the houses have very large yards.
  • There are rules about how close buildings can be to the road.
  • You can't make loud hammering noises during the summer!

All these rules make the area feel like a quiet forest. Many empty plots of land here are owned by people who want to keep the area unique. However, some of these plots have been sold recently. This has led to more new houses being built.

North of County Road 100

North of the main County Road 100, you'll find a few things. There's a grocery shop and a bakery. You can also see the old railway station building. Some apartments and terraced houses for older people are here. Plus, there are a few detached houses.

Between Ljungskogens Strandbad and the Channel

This part of Ljunghusen looks more like a typical neighborhood. Especially around Elvabo road, all the houses look the same. The road is quite wide, and there are streetlights. The Ljungsäter Hospital used to be in this area. The Hostel Lotsvillan is also found here.

The Ljungsäter Hospital Story

In 1921, a special hospital was built in Ljunghusen. It was for people with tuberculosis. This hospital was called the Ljungsäter Hospital. It got its name from the Ljungsäter farm. The road where the hospital once stood is still called Ljungsäter Road.

The hospital could care for 110 patients. It had 20 staff members, mostly from the University Hospital in Lund. Patients could arrive by a special trolley. This trolley ran from the railway line to Falsterbo. It also carried people going to the beach, which was close to the hospital. This was a horse-drawn trolley, like the one used on Storvägsområdet.

The hospital closed in 1940. This happened because the Falsterbo channel needed to be built right through the hospital building! Today, only the Doctor's house from the hospital area remains. It is still used, but it is very old.

Getting Around Ljunghusen

Today, it's easy to travel from Ljunghusen to Malmö. There are two bus stops in the area. During busy times, buses come every ten minutes! At other times, a bus comes every 20 minutes or even every hour during quiet times. The bus stops are called Elvabovägen and Storvägen.

As mentioned, Ljunghusen had a train station from 1904 to 1971. It was part of the Hvellinge-Skanör-Falsterbo railroad. The train tracks were removed in 1971. There was also a horse-drawn tram. It went from the train station along "Storvägen" down to the beach. At the beach, it split into two lines, one going east and one going west.

The Water Tower in Ljunghusen

Ljunghusen has a water tower that also acts as the town's water storage. This tower is shaped like a cylinder and is painted white. You can find it in the western part of town, near Skanörs ljung.

The tower is about 40 meters tall. It helps create water pressure for the nearby town of Höllviken. Before the Falsterbo water tower was built, it also supplied water to Skanör-Falsterbo.
