Llay-Llay is a town and a type of local government area called a commune in central Chile. It is located in the San Felipe de Aconcagua Province, which is part of the Valparaíso Region.

History of Llay-Llay
Llay-Llay became a commune on April 6, 1875. This happened during the time when Federico Errázuriz Zañartu was the President of Chile. The area first grew because a railway station was built there. This station helped three copper factories move their products.
A big event happened in Llay-Llay on September 14, 1863. People celebrated the official opening of the railway line that connected Santiago and Valparaíso. The President of Chile, Don José Joaquín Pérez, even attended a large party in the village for this special day. Because of its growth, Llay-Llay was officially named a "town" on April 6, 1875, by a special government order.
Later, in December 1925, the Llay-Llay commune became part of the Quillota Department. This department was divided into four smaller areas. Then, in March 1976, Llay-Llay became part of the San Felipe de Aconcagua Province, where it remains today.
Geography and Climate
Llay-Llay covers an area of about 349.1 square kilometers (about 135 square miles). It is known for having very hot days sometimes. On January 26, 2019, the temperature reached a record high of 42.0 degrees Celsius (107.6 degrees Fahrenheit).
The climate in Llay-Llay is generally warm. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild with some rain.

Population of Llay-Llay
The number of people living in Llay-Llay is counted in a census. The 2002 census showed that 21,644 people lived in the Llay-Llay commune. Most of these people, about 16,215 (74.9%), lived in urban areas, which are towns and cities. The rest, 5,429 people (25.1%), lived in rural areas, which are countryside areas.
The census also showed that there were slightly more women than men. There were 10,799 men and 10,845 women living in Llay-Llay at that time.
How Llay-Llay is Governed
Llay-Llay is a commune, which means it is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a group called the communal council (consejo comunal). The leader of this council is called an alcalde. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people who live in Llay-Llay.
The current alcalde of Llay-Llay is Mario Marillanca. The communal council also has several members who help make decisions for the commune. These members are:

- Manuel Maldonado
Llay-Llay is also part of larger areas for national elections. People from Llay-Llay help choose representatives for the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. These representatives work in the national government to make laws for all of Chile.
