Discovering Llangothlin

Llangothlin is known for its peaceful countryside. It sits on the Northern Tablelands, which is a high area of land. The area is perfect for those who enjoy nature and quiet living.

A Look Back in Time

The name "Llangothlin" comes from a town in Wales called Llangollen. In 1848, a large piece of land here, about 50,000 acres (200 square kilometers), was leased by William Rawson. This land was known as the Llangothlin run.

Llangothlin used to be part of the Guyra Shire local government area. However, in May 2016, it became part of the Armidale Regional Council.

Transport and Services

The New England Highway used to cross the Main North railway line right in Llangothlin. There was a special crossing point there. Now, the highway has been moved to stay on one side of the railway line.

Llangothlin also had a railway station that opened in 1884. It served the community for many years before closing around 1974. The railway line itself is now closed. The old church building in Llangothlin has been changed into a crafts shop. The Llangothlin Post Office opened on November 15, 1886, and it still helps the local community today.

Nature and Wildlife

About 11 kilometers (7 miles) northeast of Llangothlin, you can find the Little Llangothlin Nature Reserve. This reserve is located at a high elevation of 1360 meters (4462 feet). It is a very special protected area because it is the only one on the New England Tablelands that sits on basaltic soils.

The reserve includes the 120-hectare (300-acre) Little Llangothlin Lagoon. It also has part of the smaller Billy Bung Lagoon. Both the Little Llangothlin Nature Reserve and the nearby Bagot Road area are listed on the Register of the National Estate. This means they are recognized as important natural places. These two small lakes are vital breeding and feeding grounds for many waterfowl (birds that live near water) and different kinds of frogs.
