Club History: How Lleida CF Started
In May 2011, an older football club called UE Lleida had to close down. This was because they had a lot of debt. A businessman from Lleida, Sisco Pujol, bought their spot in the league. He then created a brand new club, Lleida Esportiu.
First Games and Early Success
The new team started playing in Segunda División B. This was a third-tier league in Spanish football. Their first friendly game was on August 6, 2011. They won 2–0 against Pobla de Mafumet. Their first official match was a 1–3 loss at home to Reus.
In 2013, just two years after forming, Lleida Esportiu tried to get promoted. They played in the playoffs to reach Segunda División. They tried again the next year but did not succeed. In 2016, they reached the playoff final. However, they lost after a penalty shootout.
Copa del Rey Adventures
The club had an exciting run in the 2017–18 Copa del Rey. This is a big cup competition in Spain. Lleida reached the round of 16 for the first time. They even beat a top-level team, Real Sociedad. They made an amazing comeback, overcoming a three-goal disadvantage. In the next round, they played against Atlético Madrid. They were eliminated after losing 7–0 over two games.
Recent Changes and Challenges
After some league changes, Lleida moved to the new fourth-tier league. This was called Segunda Federación for the 2021–22 season. They played in the playoffs again in 2022. They lost to Sestao River Club after a 0–0 draw.
In April 2024, the club changed its name. It became Lleida Club de Futbol. This was done to avoid some legal problems. In July 2025, Lleida CF faced a tough challenge. They were moved down to the Tercera Federación league. This happened because of some unpaid bills.
