Llynnau Mymbyr (say "Llin-eye Mim-bur") are two beautiful lakes in Snowdonia, North Wales. They are found in a valley called Dyffryn Mymbyr. This valley stretches from the village of Capel Curig to the Pen-y-Gwryd hotel. A main road, the A4086, runs right along the northern side of the lakes.
Even though we call them "Llynnau Mymbyr" (which means "Mymbyr Lakes" in Welsh, using the plural form), it's actually one long lake. It used to be called Llyn Mymbyr (Llyn means "lake"). Over time, a build-up of sand and mud, called a delta, formed in the middle. This delta has made the lake look like two separate lakes. The deepest part of the lake is about 30 feet (9 meters) deep.
The river that flows into these lakes is called the Nantygwryd. This river starts at a lake called Llyn Cwm-y-ffynnon. The Nantygwryd then joins another river, the Afon Llugwy, in Capel Curig.

Discover Llynnau Mymbyr
Llynnau Mymbyr is a special place in North Wales. It's known for its natural beauty and outdoor activities. The lakes are a great spot to learn about how landscapes are formed.
Where are the lakes located?
Llynnau Mymbyr are nestled in the heart of Snowdonia National Park. This park is famous for its stunning mountains and valleys. The lakes are easy to reach, with the A4086 road running nearby. This makes them a popular stop for visitors.
How were the lakes formed?
The lakes sit in a natural dip in the land. This dip was created by a type of rock called sandstone. This sandstone forms a ring around the lakes. You can see this ring of rock in the wide view from the north side. Behind the lakes, you can also see the strong, hard rocks of Moel Siabod mountain. These rocks are called igneous rocks, formed from cooled lava.
What activities can you do there?
Llynnau Mymbyr has been a popular place for outdoor fun for many years. In the 1960s, people used the lake for fly-fishing. They also held underwater diving lessons there. Today, the lakes are still used for training. Groups like Plas y Brenin, a national outdoor center, use the lakes. Many local schools and outdoor groups also come here. They teach canoeing and other water sports.
