Loch nam Bonnach is a quiet mountain lake in the Scottish Highlands. Its name means "Lake of Bannocks" in Scottish Gaelic. Bannocks are a type of flat bread. This special loch is found near Farley Wood in the Highland area of Scotland.

The closest small village is Ardnagrask, about 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles) away. However, most people reach the loch by following forestry tracks. These tracks start from the nearby town of Beauly.

The loch sits on a large area of peaty moorland. From here, you can look out over the beautiful Beauly Valley. It's a very peaceful and natural place.

History and Old Discoveries

Many old things have been found around Loch nam Bonnach. These discoveries tell us about the people who lived here long ago.

Ancient Forts and Tools

Archaeologists have found several Pictish forts in the area. The Picts were an ancient people who lived in Scotland. An old iron axe was also found a little to the west of the loch. These finds show that people lived and worked here many centuries ago.

Charcoal Pits

At the north end of the loch, there were once two or three charcoal pits. These pits were used to turn peat into charcoal. Charcoal was very important in the past. It was used by blacksmiths to heat their forges and shape metal.

Water for Whisky

Since the mid-1800s, the water from Loch nam Bonnach has been used for something special. It helps make single malt whisky at the nearby Glen Ord Distillery.

The distillery mixes this loch water with barley grown nearby. This creates a whisky that is known for being "sweet and heathery." Some people say it is a great example of the "Highland" style of whisky.

White Water Lilies

In the past, a beautiful flower grew in Loch nam Bonnach. This was the white water lily. The loch was even mentioned in the British Journal of Botany because of these lilies. It shows how rich the plant life around the loch once was.
