The Lockville Historic District is a special area in Southampton, Massachusetts. It's like a time capsule that shows what a busy mill village used to be like. This district is found about one mile south of Southampton Center. It's located right where College Highway (also known as Route 10) crosses the Manhan River.
The river here was very important. It had a natural drop in height, which was perfect for making power. This power ran a small group of factories, called mills. These mills were active from the 1830s until around 1900.

Discovering Lockville's Past
The Lockville Historic District is full of interesting old buildings and features. It includes the Ichabod Strong House, built around 1786. This was the home of the very first family known to run a mill here.
Mills and Water Power
You can also find the Lyman Mill, which started around 1854. Near it is Lyman Pond and its dam. This dam was built in 1838 after a big flood washed away the older one. The pond and dam were key to providing water power for the mills.
A sheet metal factory was also started by the Lyman family in 1894. This factory became even more important later on. The older mills had to close because they lost their water power. This happened when the city of Holyoke started taking water from the Manhan River.
The Old Canal and Locks
Lockville gets its name from an old canal that ran through the area. This was the New Haven and Northampton Canal, built around 1835. It had three special sections called locks here. Locks are like water elevators that help boats move up or down different water levels.
You can still see parts of this old canal today. There's also a building that used to be a hotel for canal travelers. Another building was once a storehouse. Both of these are now private homes. You can even find the remains of one of the old canal locks.
Hidden History in the Ground
Experts believe that the land around Lyman Pond holds even older secrets. They think there might be hidden remains of mills from as far back as 1732. These are called industrial archeological remnants. They are like clues from the past that tell us about old factories and how people worked.
The Lockville Historic District was officially recognized as a special historic place in 2001. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important places across the United States that are worth protecting.
