Lofenalac (say it: Lo-fen-alac) is a special powdered formula for babies and children. It is used instead of regular milk for those with a condition called phenylketonuria (PKU). This formula helps them get the right nutrients without causing health problems. It is only for people with PKU, not for others. In 1972, the FDA in the United States officially called Lofenalac a food.

What is PKU?

PKU stands for phenylketonuria. It is a rare genetic condition. People with PKU cannot properly break down a substance called phenylalanine. Phenylalanine is a part of many foods, especially protein-rich ones like milk. If too much phenylalanine builds up, it can harm the brain.

How Lofenalac Helps

Lofenalac is made to have very little phenylalanine. This means children with PKU can drink it safely. It gives them the important nutrients they need to grow and stay healthy. It helps them avoid the problems caused by too much phenylalanine.

History and Development

The first special formula for PKU, Lofenalac, was made by a company called Mead Johnson. For a long time, it was the only option available.

Other Formulas

Over time, other similar formulas were created. Some of these include Albumaid XP, Cymogran, and Minafen. These were developed in Britain. Even with new options, Lofenalac is still often suggested by doctors.

Taste and Cost

Lofenalac can be quite expensive to buy. Not many stores keep it in stock. Adults who have tried it sometimes say it has a "medical" or unusual taste and smell. However, babies usually don't mind the flavor. Many children drink it for years without any complaints.
