Lois Key is a small island located in the lower Florida Keys. It is about 20 miles (32 km) east of Key West. This island is part of the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Straits.
About Lois Key
Lois Key is special because it is not connected to the other Florida Keys by bridges or roads. This means the only way to reach the island is by boat. Most people travel to Lois Key from nearby Summerland Key. The island does not have any people living on it, so it is considered uninhabited.
Monkeys on the Island
For many years, until 1999, Lois Key was home to a unique animal population: rhesus monkeys! These monkeys were part of a commercial breeding colony. This means they were raised on the island for specific purposes, such as research.
The Monkeyfishing Story
Lois Key was once mentioned in a well-known online magazine called Slate. The article was about something called "Monkeyfishing." However, it turned out that the story was not true. It was a made-up tale.
