A Look at Lomas's History
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From that time on, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the areas of Lomas and Sabana Llana together had a population of 938 people.
