It is known as an "unincorporated community" because it does not have its own local government. It is also a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means the U.S. Census Bureau defines it for gathering population data.
Lone Oak is located in the southern part of Sequatchie County. It sits along U.S. Route 127, just south of Dunlap, Tennessee. Dunlap is the main town and county seat of Sequatchie County. Lone Oak is about 2,001 feet (610 meters) above sea level.
