Long Beach is famous for a big storm that hit before it was even a town. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel caused a lot of damage. Out of 357 buildings, only five were left standing. In 1999, Long Beach joined with its neighbor, Yaupon Beach, to form the new town of Oak Island.

Long Beach got its name because it has one of the longest stretches of sandy beach in the area. This long beach makes it a popular spot for visitors and residents.

How Long Beach Became Part of Oak Island

Before 1999, Long Beach was its own separate town. But then, it merged with Yaupon Beach. This merger created the single, larger town of Oak Island. Today, Long Beach is a well-known neighborhood within Oak Island. It still keeps its unique charm and history.
