The Story of Yaupon Beach
How Yaupon Beach Began
Yaupon Beach officially became its own town in 1955. This means it got its own local government and rules. The town was named after a special plant called yaupon. There were lots of these plants growing nearby when the town was first created.
Facing the Storms
Living by the sea means sometimes facing big storms. Yaupon Beach has been through many hurricanes. Two of the most famous were Hazel in 1954 and Floyd in 1999. Even though these storms were powerful, the community always worked to rebuild and recover.
Becoming Part of Oak Island
In 1999, Yaupon Beach joined together with its neighbor, Long Beach. They merged to form one larger town, which they named Oak Island. This merger helped them work together to manage the beautiful coastal area and its resources.
