Exploring Long Lake's Location
Long Lake is found in the northeastern part of Hamilton County. It is built around the southwestern half of a large body of water also called Long Lake. The main part of the community is on the southeastern side of the lake. This is where a major road, New York State Route 30, crosses the area.
The community stretches southwest along the lake. It even includes a smaller area known as the hamlet of Deerland. Route 30 is an important road here. If you travel north on Route 30 for about 21 miles, you will reach Tupper Lake. If you go south for about 11 miles, you will find Blue Mountain Lake.
Another important road is New York State Route 28N. This road goes east from Long Lake for about 14 miles to Newcomb. It also joins Route 30 to go south towards Blue Mountain Lake.
Land and Water Around Long Lake
The United States Census Bureau keeps track of land and water areas. They say that the Long Lake CDP covers a total area of about 36.1 square kilometers (which is about 13.9 square miles). Most of this area, about 30.4 square kilometers (11.7 square miles), is land.
The rest, about 5.7 square kilometers (2.2 square miles), is water. This means about 15.86% of the area is covered by water. The main body of water, Long Lake, flows northeastward from the CDP. Its water eventually drains into the Raquette River. The Raquette River then flows north and is a branch of the much larger St. Lawrence River.
