History of Longdale
The town of Longdale is named after Lucious Walter Long. His wife, Carrie M. Millerman, had claimed land in the Cheyenne-Arapaho Opening on April 19, 1892. After they married, they decided to make her land the site for a new town.
The Longs gave 160 acres of their northern property to a company called Union Real Estate and Townsite Company. They kept the southern part for themselves. They divided their land into areas for homes and businesses. The Longs originally wanted to name the town Longview. However, they changed it to Longdale to avoid confusion with another town called Fairview.
Some historians have mixed up Longdale with a place called Cainville. Cainville was about 2 miles north of Longdale. It already had a post office where Longdale residents could get their mail. On November 28, 1903, the Cainville post office moved to Longdale. Robert L. Eaton became the new postmaster.
A newspaper called the Longdale Register started on October 23, 1903. The Longs had also sold some of their land to the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway. The railway finally reached Longdale on June 10, 1905.
Carrie Millerman became the first teacher in the area. A temporary school opened on November 30, 1894, about 2 miles north of Longdale. A new school building opened right in Longdale on November 5, 1906. By the first official count of people in 1910, Longdale had a population of 296.
