The Longwood Medical and Academic Area, often called Longwood Medical Area, LMA, or just Longwood, is a very important medical and learning hub in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It's like a special neighborhood filled with hospitals, schools, and research centers. You can find it next to Longwood Avenue, close to areas like Fenway–Kenmore, Audubon Circle, Mission Hill, and the town of Brookline.
This area is famous for being home to Harvard Medical School, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Many of Harvard's teaching hospitals are also here. But it's not just Harvard! Other major medical and research places are in Longwood too. It's known worldwide as a top spot for medical research. In 2018, the groups in Longwood received over $1.2 billion for research. This money came from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). That's more research money than 44 entire states received!

- Subway Stations: Two subway stations serve Longwood Avenue.

- Bus Routes: Many public bus routes also stop in the area.
- Commuter Rail: You can also take the commuter rail to Ruggles Station, which is nearby.
- Shuttle Buses: The Longwood Collective helps people get around. They offer shuttle buses for staff and students. These shuttles travel within the Longwood Medical Area. They also connect to Harvard University's main campus in Cambridge. The shuttle to Harvard's main campus is called M2. It's free if you have a Harvard ID.
How Longwood Gets Power
The Longwood Medical Area has its own special power plant. It's called the Medical Area Total Energy Plant (MATEP). This plant provides electricity, cooling, and heating for the entire area. It uses a smart system called trigeneration (CCHP). This means it creates three types of energy at once, which is very efficient!
