Lord Bernard Stewart facts for kids
Lord Bernard Stewart (born in 1623) was a brave nobleman from France and Scotland. He was a distant cousin of King Charles I of England. Bernard fought as a Royalist leader, supporting the King, during the English Civil War. Sadly, he was killed in battle when he was only 22 years old and had not yet married.
His Family Background
Bernard was the youngest of six sons. His father was Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox, who lived from 1579 to 1624. His mother was Katherine Clifton, 2nd Baroness Clifton. Bernard's oldest brother was James Stewart, who became the 1st Duke of Richmond and 4th Duke of Lennox.
A Young Commander in the Civil War
King Charles I planned to make Lord Bernard an Earl. This was because of his courage in important battles. Bernard fought bravely at the first and second Battles of Newbury. He also showed great skill at the Battle of Naseby.
However, Bernard died from injuries he received in September 1645. He was leading a charge against enemy forces during the Battle of Rowton Heath. He passed away before the official documents, called letters patent, could be prepared to make him an Earl.
Because of his death, the titles of Baron Newbury and Earl of Lichfield were given to his six-year-old nephew instead. This was Charles Stewart, who was the 3rd Duke of Richmond and 6th Duke of Lennox. Charles was the son of Bernard's older brother, George Stewart, 9th Seigneur d'Aubigny. George had also been killed in the war, at the Battle of Edgehill in 1642. Bernard's other older brother, Lord John Stewart, died in 1644 at the Battle of Cheriton.
