Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lord Cardross is a special title in Scotland. It's like a noble rank given to important families. Since 1695, it has been a smaller title connected to the bigger title of Earl of Buchan.

The title was first created in 1606 for John Erskine, who was already the Earl of Mar. He could choose who would inherit the title after him. In 1617, he chose his second son, Henry Erskine, to be the next Lord Cardross.

When the Earl of Mar passed away in 1634, his grandson, David Erskine, became the second Lord Cardross. David was the son of Henry, who had died earlier in 1628.

Early Lords Cardross

David Erskine, the second Lord Cardross, supported a group called "The Engagement." Because of this, he was not allowed to be part of the Scottish Parliament in 1649.

His oldest son became the third Lord Cardross. This third Lord moved to North America to escape being treated unfairly for his religious beliefs. He started a new settlement in a place now known as Carolina.

His son, the fourth Lord Cardross, became the Earl of Buchan in 1695. However, it took until 1698 for the Scottish government to officially recognize his right to this bigger title. To learn more about the title's history, you can look up Earl of Buchan.
