Lord Colin Campbell facts for kids
Lord Colin Campbell (born March 9, 1853 – died June 18, 1895) was a Scottish politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party. He served in the House of Commons, which is like the main law-making body in the UK. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1878 to 1885.
Early Life and Education
Colin Campbell was the fifth son of a very important family. His father was George Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll. His mother was Lady Elizabeth Georgiana. She was the daughter of another important person, the 2nd Duke of Sutherland.
Colin went to some famous schools. He studied at Eton College, which is a well-known boarding school. He also attended St Andrews University and Trinity College, Cambridge. These are two of the oldest and most respected universities in the UK.
In 1875, he started training to become a lawyer at a place called Middle Temple. He was also a lieutenant in the 2nd Argyll Rifle Volunteers. This was a local military group.
Political Career
Lord Colin Campbell became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1878. He represented the area of Argyllshire in Scotland. He held this job until 1885.
During his time as an MP, some people in Argyllshire were not happy with him. They even made up a funny song about him. The song suggested that the Campbells, his family, were "cunning."
Because of this, his brother, the Marquess of Lorne, had to find a different place to run for Parliament. The Marquess was also Queen Victoria's son-in-law. He had been an MP for Argyllshire before. After being the Governor-General of Canada, he wanted to return to politics. But because of Colin's unpopularity, he ran for a seat in Hampstead in 1885, but he did not win.
Marriage and Later Life
In 1881, Lord Colin Campbell married Gertrude Elizabeth Blood. She was the daughter of Edmund Maghlin Blood, an Irish landowner. They did not have any children.
The couple separated in 1884. They had a difficult legal case in 1886. Gertrude wanted a divorce, but the court did not allow it. They remained married until Lord Colin passed away.
Lord Colin Campbell died in Bombay, India, in 1895. Gertrude Elizabeth became a well-known person in society. She was known for her writing and her clever remarks. She died in November 1911.
