Lord George William Montagu Douglas Scott, OBE, DL (born 31 August 1866 – died 23 February 1947) was a Scottish soldier and a talented cricketer. He was the third son of William Montagu Douglas Scott, who was the 6th Duke of Buccleuch.

Early Life and Cricket

Lord George was born at Bowhill, in Selkirkshire, Scotland. His father was William Montagu Douglas Scott, the 6th Duke of Buccleuch. His older brother was John Montagu Douglas Scott, who later became the 7th Duke of Buccleuch. Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, was his niece.

Education and Sports

He went to school at Eton, a famous boarding school, and then studied at Christ Church, Oxford, which is part of Oxford University. While at university and afterwards, he was a very good cricketer. He played what is called first-class cricket for different teams. These included Middlesex, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), and Oxford University. He played cricket from 1884 until 1905. He also played for the "Gentlemen" team in special matches against the "Players" team. Outside of cricket, he was in charge of the Duke of Buccleuch's Hunt, which was a traditional fox hunt.

Military Service

Lord George had a long career in the army. He first joined the 10th Hussars regiment as a second lieutenant in 1889. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1890 and then to captain in 1897.

Fighting in Wars

He served as a soldier in the Second Boer War, which took place in South Africa. After this war, he left the regular army in 1902. However, he later commanded a special army unit called the 2/1st Lothians and Border Horse. This was a Yeomanry regiment, which means it was made up of volunteers, similar to today's Territorial Army. He led this unit throughout World War I until he retired from the army in January 1919.

Later Roles

For his service, Lord George was given an important award called the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 1919. He also held the position of Deputy Lieutenant for Roxburghshire, which meant he helped the Lord-Lieutenant with local duties.
